2012 Premier's Community Excellence Awards in Mining and Energy

for excellence in delivering community and social benefits by the minerals and energy resources sectors

The South Australian Government is committed to generating 'our fair share of the mining boom' to ensure that current and future South Australians share in the economic and social opportunities generated by the mining and energy resource sectors operating in this state. The South Australian Strategic Plan 2011 also outlines key targets that address Aboriginal wellbeing and unemployment, economic disadvantage, social participation, employment for people with a disability, and Aboriginal unemployment. 

In recognition of the ways in which the mining and energy sectors facilitate the delivery of social and community benefits to South Australians, two separate awards will be delivered in 2012 – one rewarding excellence in social inclusion and the other rewarding excellence in supporting community participation.

The achievements of the winning companies will set an example to other industry participants of innovation and excellence in corporate social responsibility.

The Premier of South Australia will present the awards at the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME) Resources Industry Annual Dinner on 30 April 2012 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. 

Award for excellence in social inclusion

This award recognises a mining or energy resource company that has demonstrated leadership, commitment and a ‘best practice’ approach to improving the social wellbeing of South Australia’s most disadvantaged groups through programs and practices that increase opportunities for them to engage with the economic and social benefits the sector has to offer. This particular action can be described as 'social inclusion'.

In describing South Australia’s ‘Social Inclusion Initiative’, former Commissioner for Social Inclusion, Monsignor David Cappo, described the concept of social inclusion as 'providing people with the fundamentals of a decent life: opportunities to engage in the economic and social life of the community with dignity; increasing their capabilities and functioning; connecting people to the networks of local community; supporting health, housing, education, skills training, employment and caring responsibilities'. The Australian Government has also described the principles of social inclusion as:

  • reducing disadvantage
  • increasing social, civic and economic participation
  • developing a greater voice, combined with greater responsibility

Some examples of the social inclusion activities currently provided by the mining and energy sector include:

  • Training programs for economically and socially disadvantaged people
  • Providing jobs for local and/or Aboriginal people
  • Mentoring Aboriginal businesses and providing contract opportunities
  • Targeted funding of community trusts or local community services/infrastructure to improve social wellbeing in regions in which they operate
  • Sourcing goods and services from local communities

Award for excellence in supporting community participation

This award recognises a mining or energy company that has demonstrated industry excellence in developing, stewarding or supporting community-wide participation in social or community activities. These activities can play a large role in improving social wellbeing, developing greater cultural awareness, fostering creativity and innovation, and building a more vibrant and sustainable South Australian community.

The activities tend to be broad scale community activities from which a large proportion of the South Australian community can benefit - and that do not relate to the core business of the mining and energy sectors. Activities or programs designed to increase the ability for regional and remote communities to participate in events that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to can also be an example of this.

Some examples of support for community participation by the minerals and energy resources sectors include:

  • Festivals or community events
  • Art shows or exhibitions
  • Cultural and other community awareness activities
    • Indigenous culture exhibitions or programs
    • Multicultural awareness activities
  • Sporting events
  • Travelling ‘road shows’ to regional and remote communities
