About Minerals

DMITRE's Mineral Resources Division (MRD) has a pivotal role in supporting mining exploration and the development of new mines throughout the state.

The Mineral Resources Division manages the State’s mineral resources by:

  • Regulating mining operations
  • Implementing significant exploration initiatives
  • Providing comprehensive, high quality geoscientific data and advice
  • Developing sustainable practices for exploration and mining
  • Facilitating mineral resource projects through approval processes
  • Developing an effective and efficient policy and legislative framework
  • Collecting mineral royalties and fees

The Mineral Resources Division is acknowledged nationally and internationally as the lead agency facilitating ecologically-sustainable mineral exploration production and development in South Australia.

The group provides a supportive framework for industry across all areas of development, from initial exploration to operating mines and eventual rehabilitation.

Exploration initiatives

The South Australian Government’s Plan for Accelerating Exploration (PACE) initiative has been expanded with an extra $10.2 million funding. The new PACE initiative, PACE 2020, will focus on maintaining mineral exploration levels at or above the SASP (South Australia Strategic Plan) targets at the same time as offering programs to drive forward mining development.

The Resources and Energy Group manages the PACE initiative.

PACE won the 2007 Inaugural Premier's Award for Growing Prosperity.

SA Strategic Plan targets

The South Australian Strategic Plan 2011 (external site, opens in new window) sets out the following targets for mineral exploration, production, refinement and exports:
