Resource Industry Development Board

Resource Industry Development Board members

The Resources Industry Development Board (RIDB) was established in 2000 as a key response to recommendations of the Resources Task Force, set up in 1999 to report on strategies to shape the future of the industry.

The main function of the RIDB is to enhance the growth and contribution of South Australia's mineral and petroleum resources sector to the state's economy.

Function statement

The Board's seminal purpose is to provide advice to the Government through the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy that enhances the sustainable growth of the minerals and energy sector in South Australia and its contribution to the state's economic and social development.

Terms of reference

  • Provide strategic and policy advice to the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy to assist the government in the development and achievement of the minerals and energy resource targets of the State Strategic Plan.
  • Champion and support the implementation of the relevant South Australian Strategic Plan targets and the government's minerals and energy resource policies.
  • Provide advice to the South Australian Department for Manufacturing, Innovation, Trade, Resources and Energy (DMITRE) with respect to policy, plans and programs impacting on the mineral and energy resources sector.
  • Provide advice on the enhancement of South Australia's competitiveness in the global mineral and energy resources sector.

Operation of the board

The membership will comprise persons nominated by the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy who have the skills and experience in business and in managing issues of direct relevance to the mienrals and energy industries and its stakeholders.

The board will suggest synergies and coordinate where appropriate with other peak industry and government bodies.

The board will use the collective experience of its members to provide insightful and independent advice, so that actions are focussed and achievable and directed where the greatest leverage exists for enhancing development of the minerals and energy industries.

The board reports through the chair to the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy.

The board will periodically evaluate its effectiveness and performance and the appropriateness of its terms of reference and membership, reporting to the Minister accordingly.

Key objectives

The RIDB has defined its key objectives as:

  • Making land more accessible

Facilitating access to land is the pre-eminent exploration issue. A policy of multiple land use is essential for the state's continued economic development. This policy and its implementation must be accomplished in a culturally and environmentally sensitive approach engaging with all stakeholders. The RIDB has a key role in advising DMITRE in the management of these issues.

  • Stimulating vibrant exploration activity

A vibrant exploration environment is achieved through the provision of accessible, relevant and innovative pre-competitive data, supportive government policies and initiatives, and importantly, continued discovery success. The RIDB has a key role in advising the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy and DMITRE on the planning and implementation of such initiatives. The RIDB also has an advisory role in determining realistic targets to monitor the state's performance in this area relative to other national and international jurisdictions.

  • Expediting sustainable development, production and processing

Wealth creation through the minerals and energy resources sector in South Australia is predicated on moving beyond the exploration stage to the establishment of long term, sustainable mining and minerals processing. The RIDB is tasked with providing advice to the Minister for Mineral Resources and Energy and government to ensure the full value chain of the resources sector is realised. This should include social inclusion, regional development, training and employment, and research and development (R&D) capacity enhancement.
