About the Angas zinc projectThe Angas zinc project is located 2km outside the rural town of Strathalbyn, 60km south east of Adelaide. The zinc and silver-lead deposit was discovered in 1991 by Aberfoyle Resources Limited, but on its analysis of the regional geology, was not deemed large enough to warrant further exploration and possible development. Terramin acquired the licences in 1997 and commenced an intensive drilling program to further define the mineral reserves. In April 2007 PIRSA (now part of DMITRE) approved Terramin’s mining and rehabilitation plan (MARP) (now deemed to be a PEPR) allowing construction to begin on the $64m Angas Mine. Mining Reserves of 2.41 Mt at 7.00% zinc (Zn), 2.72% lead (Pb), 31.00 g/t silver (Ag) and 0.48 g/t gold (Au) have been defined for an initial seven-year operation. There will also be a high level of precious metal entitlements (gold and silver) net to Terramin as a by-product of the concentrates once processed through a smelter. Production commenced in the third quarter of 2008 with the first lead-precious metal concentrate trucked to Nyrstar Port Pirie smelter in July and the first shipment of 5400 tonnes of zinc concentrate leaving Port Adelaide for South Korea in September. Terramin has a whole-of-mine offtake agreement with Sempra Metals and Concentrates Corp. for all of the Angas Mine concentrates. The mine is set to inject $30m a year into the regional economy and directly employs 63 people. |
