map showing location of Prominent Hill mine

Ankata (Prominent Hill underground) mine is 130 km NW of Olympic Dam and 130 km SE of Coober Pedy in the Gawler Craton.

Ankata is an underground extension to the Malu (Prominent Hill open cut) mine.

The Mining and Rehabilitation Program (MARP) for Ankata Prominent Hill underground mine has now been approved. This will mine deep extensions of thick, mineralised hematite breccias characteristic of Prominent Hill Shear Zone mineralisation and adjacent ore domains, and extensions to hematite altered Cu–Au-bearing breccias directly beneath the eastern gold zone and eastern margin of the Malu Prominent Hill open cut pit.

Earthworks have commenced on the access road for the underground operation.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2012.

Anticipated mine life is 5 years with a capital cost of $AUD135M.

110 people to be employed during construction, followed by 150 during production (this is additional to Malu, the open cut mine).

Exploration is in progress to extend the life of mine beyond five years.
