Mining operation:

Mining of stage 1 open pit and small adjacent auxilliary pit was completed in 2004, followed by development of the underground mine. The Challenger gold project consists of underground mining and a crushing and processing carbon-in-pulp plant.

The deposit:

The ore zone is an elongate, tightly folded, steeply plunging ‘M’ structure hosted by Archaean aluminous metasediments. Geological work indicates that mineralisation is associated with contemporaneous volcanics.

Approval process: 

The revised program for environment protection and rehabilitation (PEPR), submitted in February 2012, has been approved by DMITRE.
