Plan for Accelerating Exploration

Unlocking South Australia's Mineral and Energy Potential

The people of South Australia depend for their future prosperity on making the most of the opportunities available in our state. One of the most significant opportunities lies in the rational and planned development of our mineral and energy resources industry in line with economic, social and environmental needs.

The industry has the potential to make a significant contribution to regional development, by boosting economic activity and local employment opportunities and thus the quality of life for regional communities. The wealth directly generated by mining is clearly apparent. Mineral and energy resource developments also create significant infrastructure, jobs and spill-over activities in regional communities.

PACE aims

The Plan for Accelerating Exploration (PACE) aims to build upon the work of the Resources Task Force and other earlier initiatives to ensure South Australia is showcased to the world as a premier destination for resource investment. Development of this Plan was guided by the following principles:

  • The potential for mineral resource development offers the opportunity for a step change in the state’s economic position.
  • Environmentally sustainable development principles underpin future exploration and mining.
  • A blanket of sediment cover makes the discovery of South Australia’s mineral and energy resources more difficult than in other regions.
  • Investment depends on perceptions of South Australia’s mineral and petroleum resource potential - we must aim to be positioned at the top of global prospectivity rankings and enhance the industry’s perception of South Australia’s prospectivity.
  • We are committed to building sustainable communities in outback and regional areas, and in particular to supporting indigenous communities. Resource development will help generate wealth and opportunities for these communities.
  • Ensuring land is accessible and government policies are supportive for commercial success, underpins the government’s commitment to realising South Australia’s resources potential.
  • The Plan for Accelerating Exploration will focus industry, universities, cooperative research centres (CRCs) and other government initiatives towards ensuring maximum benefit and integrated delivery in the shortest possible time.
  • The South Australian Exploration Initiative (SAEI) and a generation of Targeted Exploration Initiative South Australia (TEISA) programs have provided a strong foundation from which the Plan for Accelerating Exploration will build South Australia as a premier destination for world resource investment.

Outcomes

The four major outcomes of this plan will be:

  • Improved land access decision-making under a multiple land use framework.
  • South Australia will become recognised as a world-class centre of excellence in exploring under a cover of rocks and other materials.
  • Increased exploration expenditure by the mineral and petroleum resources sector leading to
new discoveries and opportunities for regional development, employment and exports.
  • The emergence of sustainable communities within indigenous communities.
