May 27, 2009
The annual seasonal closure for the taking of rock lobsters commences at 6pm this Sunday 31 May.
PIRSA Fisheries Regional Manager West, Andrew Carr, said that from that time onwards all rock lobster fishing activity on the west coast must cease and that all pots should be removed from the water.
The closure is part of the sustainable management of the rock lobster fishery, and is designed to protect rock lobster populations from fishing pressure during the spawning season.
“PIRSA Fisheries Officers will be patrolling known rock lobster fishing areas including utilising aerial surveillance to ensure all rock lobster fishing has ceased by the required time. Any pots located after that time will be seized and their registered owners contacted,” Mr Carr said.
The northern rock lobster season will reopen from mid day 1 November, 2009.
Anyone can report illegal fishing activity through the 24 hour FISHWATCH number on 1800 065 522. Callers will speak to a Fisheries Officer and can choose to remain anonymous.
