Planning & Development

The Development Planning & Policy unit of PIRSA's Agriculture, Food and Wine Division works at the interface between the primary industries sector and South Australia’s planning and development system. The DPP unit provides whole-of-division (and in some matters, whole-of-agency) coordination on responses to development proposals, changes to local and State planning policy, and input to the Planning Strategy.

In this role the unit’s main emphases are on:

  1. Asset management - ensuring agricultural industries have long-term access to key resources; and
  2. Optimising the regulatory environment for sustainable primary production - promoting a simplified and transparent policy framework for primary producers and industry investors.

These goals are advanced through project work (eg identifying areas of primary production significance), by convening stakeholder forums, and by promoting policy reform (eg periodically reviewing referral arrangements for certain types of development proposals).

The unit also responds to special requests for advice on major projects, such as the impacts of the Northern Expressway on horticulture on the Northern Adelaide Plains, and strategic options for South Australia’s 2 million population target.
