The Wine ScoreCard is a tool, developed by PIRSA, that evaluates the contribution made by the wine industry to South Australia's economy from production to consumption. This economic analysis enables us to estimate the value of production; imports; inter-State trade and changes to stocks; retail sales; and the contribution made by the hospitality sector. The Grape and Wine Group has a whole of through chain responsibility for the Grape and Wine Industry, with an industry development role in all facets of the industry - from grape growing to marketing.

It has responsibility for policy advice on legislation that impacts on the wine industry:

  • Wine Grapes Industry Act 1991
  • Phylloxera and Grape Industry Act 1998
  • Primary Industry Funding Schemes Act 1998

and for administering the Wine Industry Funds established under the Primary Industry Funding Schemes Act 1998.

The Group takes the lead role in developing directions, policy advice, collaborative infrastructure and programs to implement the priorities mapped out in Wine: A Partnership 2005-2010. This involves providing leadership across PIRSA and other government departments, and working closely with corporations, executive and a wide range of other industry stakeholders. This is a small, high performing team with a responsibility to:

  • Take a leadership role in the development, coordination and implementation of initiatives to realise the objectives of the Partnering Strategy
  • Develop and strengthen the collaborative infrastructure (industry, government partnerships) within the state
  • Provide high level policy advice on a range of legislative frameworks which impact on the wine industry
  • Provide expert executive services to the South Australian Wine Industry Council, its Task Groups and Issues Group.

Agricultural and wine industries in South Australia contribute in excess of A$5 billion production value and more than double this in value adding to the economy of the state. Wine currently contributes around A$2.4 billion to the State's economy. The vision is for this contribution to grow to at least A$3.1 billion per annum by 2010.

The wine industry works in a collaborative partnership with the South Australian government through the South Australian Wine Industry Council (SAWIC). PIRSA provides expert executive services to the Council, its Task Groups and Issues Group and develops and strengthens the collaborative infrastructure within the state.

The Wine Partnership Operational Program provides the framework for achieving the objectives set out in this partnership strategy. PIRSA takes a leadership role in the development, coordination and implementation of initiatives outlined by the Operational Program.
